Pediatric Acupuncture

Acupuncture

As in the Western medical paradigm, pediatrics is a specialty within the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM.
As ambassadors of western healthcare in the field of physical rehabilitation, we believe strongly in the merits of Western medicine for both children and adults. It is our philosophy, however, that if we can promote health and the lessening of illness and disease through natural methods it provides an important complement to Western Medicine and not necessarily an alternative.

Children are bundles of energy, the envy of adults. They can run all day and stay up all night. As they continue to grow physically so does their immune system. Until the age of puberty, children are exposed to illnesses and developmental challenges that they may not be mature enough to handle. Chinese Medicine is the perfect medium to help usher children into healthy and productive adults.

Often times, children respond to TCM treatment very rapidly and recovery is quick. TCM is most commonly defined in the West as Acupuncture. We see pictures in the media of people lying on their backs with a myriad of needles inserted in to their face and head. The reality is that Acupuncture is only one part of Chinese Medicine and when it is utilized with children it is done with needles that are specially designed for the pediatric patient; oftentimes only one or two points are chosen and the needle is rarely retained in the skin but rather is inserted and quickly removed.

The examination is comprehensive. All diagnostic tests will be reviewed and applicable orthopedic Special Tests will be performed in conjunction with a gait analysis, joint range of motion and muscle testing. Once a diagnosis has been made, a Plan of Care will be formulated with the cooperation of the parent to establish both short term and long-term goals and treatment will commence. All cases are unique and are approached that way. Individualized treatments prove far more efficacious then the one size fits all cookie cutter approach that some practitioners employ. Treatment performed in this fashion is really combining the “best of both worlds”. You have diagnostics and therapeutic exercises that have been proven to be valid and reliable in Western medicine’s evidenced based model coupled with the wisdom that comes from 2000 years of Chinese Medicine.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a safe, painless, natural, drug-free and effective method to restore health and balance to your life. Acupuncture awakens your body’s natural healing capabilities, and restores you back to your optimal state of health and well-being.

Acupuncture stimulates the body’s ability to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by correcting imbalances. Acupuncture also prompts the body to produce chemicals that decrease or eliminate painful sensations.
